GST for Small Amazon/Flipkart Sellers Under โ‚น20 Lakh | GSTZone
GST FAQ · Registration

I Sell on Amazon & Flipkart, Turnover Only โ‚น8 Lakh โ€” Do I Still Need GST Registration?

GSTZone Desk · Updated 2026

Short answer

Yes โ€” turnover has no bearing on this at all. Selling goods through Amazon or Flipkart (or any e-commerce operator) requires GST registration from your very first rupee of sale, regardless of how small your total turnover is.

In detail

It’s a completely understandable assumption that โ‚น8 lakh, sitting well below both the โ‚น20 lakh and โ‚น40 lakh general thresholds, should mean no registration needed yet. But that assumption applies to a regular offline or own-website business โ€” not to goods sold through a marketplace.

As covered at the start of this series, Section 24 of the CGST Act pulls anyone supplying goods through an e-commerce operator into COMPULSORY registration, specifically overriding the normal turnover-based exemption. This isn’t a higher threshold for marketplace sellers โ€” it’s the complete removal of any threshold for this specific category.

The reasoning connects to how the marketplace’s TCS (tax collected at source) mechanism works โ€” it needs every seller to have a GSTIN for that TCS credit to be properly attributed, regardless of the seller’s size.

GSTZone tip

Don’t let a small, early-stage turnover create a false sense of safety if you’re already listing goods on a marketplace โ€” this is one of the more commonly and expensively missed compliance points for small sellers just starting out on Amazon or Flipkart.

Related questions

Is there really no small-seller relief at all for marketplace goods sellers?+

There’s a narrow 2023 scheme for sellers doing purely intra-state sales through an e-commerce operator, letting them use an Enrolment ID instead of full registration โ€” but most marketplace fulfilment models don’t fit this narrow condition.

What if I’m just testing the marketplace with a few sample listings?+

The legal requirement doesn’t scale with intent or volume โ€” even a genuinely small test listing that results in a sale still falls under this compulsory registration requirement.
