Can You Claim ITC on a Mobile Phone Bought for Office Use?
GSTZone Desk · Updated 2026
Short answer
Yes โ a mobile phone bought for genuine business use is a normal, allowable input tax credit. It isn’t on Section 17(5)’s blocked-credit list at all.
In detail
Unlike cars, mobile phones don’t have a special restriction under GST. If the phone is genuinely used for business purposes, the ITC on its purchase follows the normal rule โ claimable, just like any other capital purchase for the business.
What actually decides whether the credit sticks isn’t the nature of the item, but the paperwork around it: the invoice needs to be raised in the business’s name and GSTIN, not the individual employee’s personal details, and it needs to show up correctly in your GSTR-2B.
A phone bought personally and later ‘claimed’ for the business, without a proper business-name invoice, doesn’t qualify โ the credit chain starts at the invoice, and a retail bill made out to an individual by name generally can’t be converted into a business claim after the fact.
GSTZone tip
When buying phones or laptops for the team, always give the seller your business GSTIN at the point of purchase โ asking for a GST-compliant invoice after the sale is far harder than getting it right at checkout.
Related questions
What if the phone is used partly for personal calls too?+
Common practical use includes some personal use without disqualifying the credit, as long as the phone is genuinely a business asset โ the block only kicks in for purchases that are entirely personal in nature.
Does the same apply to laptops and other electronics?+
Yes โ laptops, computers, and similar equipment bought for business use follow the same straightforward ITC-eligible treatment, since they aren’t on the blocked-credit list.
