GST on Cab Fare: Full Amount, Not Just Commission | GSTZone
GST FAQ · Cab Aggregators

Is GST Charged on the Full Cab Fare or Only the Commission Uber/Ola Takes?

GSTZone Desk · Updated 2026

Short answer

On the full fare โ€” the 5% GST on a cab aggregator ride is charged on the entire amount you pay for the trip, not just the commission the platform keeps from the driver’s earnings.

In detail

This is a very natural point of confusion, since the platform’s actual revenue from any single ride is just its commission โ€” the rest passes through to the driver. But GST doesn’t tax the platform’s margin here; it taxes the value of the underlying SERVICE, which is the transportation itself, at its full value.

So a โ‚น500 cab ride carries 5% GST calculated on that full โ‚น500, roughly โ‚น25 โ€” regardless of whether the platform’s own commission on that ride is โ‚น100 or โ‚น50.

This full-fare basis is consistent with how GST generally treats the value of a service supply โ€” it’s the value of what the CUSTOMER receives and pays for that matters, not how that payment is subsequently split between the platform and the service provider (the driver) behind the scenes.

GSTZone tip

If you’re a business trying to work out the GST embedded in a cab expense for accounting purposes, calculate it against the full fare shown on your receipt โ€” not against any commission figure, which isn’t visible to you as a passenger anyway.

Related questions

Is this different from how food delivery apps charge GST?+

Food delivery platforms have their own specific GST treatment (often collecting and paying GST on behalf of restaurants below the registration threshold) โ€” a related but distinct e-commerce-operator mechanism from cab aggregation.

Why does the fare-based full-value approach matter to the government?+

Taxing the full service value, rather than just an intermediary’s margin, ensures the tax collected reflects the actual value of transportation service consumed by the passenger โ€” consistent with GST’s broader value-added design.
