If You Forget to Act on an Invoice in IMS, Do You Lose the ITC?

GSTZone Desk · Updated 2026

Short answer

No โ€” forgetting to take action on a genuine, correct invoice does NOT cause you to lose that ITC. Because of the deemed-acceptance default covered in the previous question, an invoice you never touched still flows through as accepted, and the credit still reaches your GSTR-2B and 3B as normal.

In detail

This is worth stating plainly because the fear itself โ€” ‘what if I forget and lose money’ โ€” is one of the most common anxieties around IMS, and it’s based on a misunderstanding of how the default actually works. The system isn’t designed to punish inaction on a valid invoice; it’s designed to let inaction be safe for the normal case.

The only way you genuinely lose out through IMS is through an ACTIVE mistake in the other direction โ€” deliberately or accidentally REJECTING a genuine invoice that you should have accepted, or needing to reject something wrong and failing to do so, letting bad credit flow through unchecked.

So the practical risk IMS introduces isn’t ‘I forgot to log in this month’ โ€” it’s specifically ‘I clicked the wrong button on an invoice I did look at,’ which is a much narrower and more manageable risk than the fear of blanket forgetfulness suggests.

GSTZone tip

If IMS anxiety is genuinely affecting how your team works, redirect that energy toward double-checking any REJECT action before confirming it, rather than worrying about invoices you simply never got around to opening โ€” that’s exactly the distinction that decides whether ITC is at risk.

Related questions

Is there any invoice type where inaction IS risky?+

Certain categories flagged for mandatory action (rather than allowing simple deemed acceptance) do exist in specific edge cases โ€” it’s worth being generally aware that IMS occasionally treats certain invoice types differently, though the vast majority of routine invoices follow the safe deemed-acceptance default.

Does deemed acceptance also apply to credit notes from suppliers?+

Credit notes have their own specific handling nuance โ€” since rejecting a credit note has a different downstream effect (covered elsewhere in this series), it’s worth being more deliberate about credit notes specifically than about ordinary purchase invoices.
