Is Aadhaar Authentication Compulsory for GST Registration?

GSTZone Desk · Updated 2026

Short answer

Not legally mandatory in the sense that you can still apply without it โ€” but skipping it forces a compulsory physical verification of your business premises, which is slower and more intrusive than most applicants realise.

In detail

The GST portal offers Aadhaar authentication as an OTP-based e-KYC step during registration. Technically, you can decline it and proceed with the application.

But Rule 9 treats the two paths very differently. Complete the Aadhaar step, and (barring risk flags) your application can be approved on document review alone within 7 working days. Skip it, and the rule mandates a physical site visit to your declared place of business before the officer can approve anything โ€” which realistically means someone from the department showing up, and a timeline that can stretch to 30 days.

For that reason, almost every applicant who has the option completes Aadhaar authentication โ€” not because the law forces it, but because the alternative is genuinely slower and more disruptive.

GSTZone tip

If the Aadhaar-linked mobile number is outdated or the OTP isn’t landing, fix that before you start the application rather than skipping the step โ€” restarting an application after a failed authentication attempt is faster than living with a mandatory site visit.

Can I complete Aadhaar authentication after submitting the application?+

Yes, there is a window to complete it after ARN generation, but doing it upfront avoids any doubt about which processing track your application falls into.
