GST Registration Cancelled for Non-Filing? Here’s How to Get It Back
GSTZone Desk · Updated 2026
Short answer
File every pending return up to the cancellation date, clear the tax, interest and late fee due, and then apply for revocation in Form GST REG-21 โ you generally have 90 days from the cancellation order, extendable further on genuine grounds.
In detail
A GSTIN cancelled by the department for non-filing (rather than one you cancelled yourself) can be revived, but the portal won’t let you file REG-21 until your compliance backlog is actually cleared โ every overdue return through the date of cancellation has to be filed first, with the tax, interest, and late fee paid.
Section 30 gives 90 days from the date of the cancellation order to apply for revocation. If you miss that, the Commissioner has the power to condone the delay for a further period on sufficient cause being shown โ so a missed 90-day window isn’t automatically fatal, but it does mean explaining why you were late, not just filing late.
Once REG-21 is filed with everything cleared, the officer either revokes the cancellation (restoring the GSTIN) or, if not satisfied, issues a rejection with reasons โ which itself can be contested.
GSTZone tip
Before filing REG-21, actually pull your return-filing status page and count every gap โ a single missed month you forgot about is enough for the application to be rejected on a technicality. Clear the whole backlog, not just the obvious recent one.

Can I start a fresh GST registration instead of reviving the old one?+
You generally cannot get a fresh registration on the same PAN while an old cancelled GSTIN’s dues remain unresolved โ the outstanding liability follows the person, not just the number.
Does revocation waive the late fee?+
No โ revocation is not an amnesty. Every rupee of tax, interest and late fee for the pending period still has to be paid; revocation only restores the registration once you’re compliant.
